Lübeck's Water Marionette Theatre is the only one of its kind in the world.
It gives a very special underwater performance using lighting, music and colour. The audience sits below the surface of the water and is able to watch the goings-on without getting wet.
The artists, Simone Frömming and Wolf Malten, have been experimenting with materials and puppets in the water since 1993. The medium of water, in addition to the lighting and music, allows them to present a very visual and distinctive staging. Different water tanks ranging from 10 litres up to 3,000 litres are used during the theatre performances.
Lübeck Puppet Theatre under Water was even recognised as an art form of puppet theatre in its own right thanks to an academic study undertaken by the University of Vienna.
