On this city walk, you will discover the ramparts and Lübeck’s green side.

Begin your tour in the Cafébar of our Tourist Information at Holstentorplatz. Marvel at the magnificent Holsten Gate and get in the mood for your peaceful walk over a delicious fair-trade coffee or a tasty soup of the day on the sunny terrace.
The ramparts tour starts at the nearby Barth Square, located at the Puppenbrücke bridge. Originally set up by the Lübeck municipal gardener and first German Professor of Horticulture, Erwin Barth, Barth Platz forms the main entrance to the idyllic ramparts on Stadtgraben. Enjoy the beautiful view of the water and then descend the steps to the semicircular Sonnenplatz. Treat yourself to some sunshine here on a bench.
As you head South, you can follow the path along the water or climb Schneckenberg on the former “Katze” bastion from which you have a fantastic view of the Old Town with its church spires. After crossing Possehlstraße, you start the ascent to the former bastion of “Kommiss” where you can play minigolf at the popular complex on Wallstraße. The next staging post is the large sportsground of Buniamshof. It was designed by Erwin Barth in 1910 and then as now, it hosted major sporting events in the Hanseatic city.
Carry on over the crown of the ramparts offering a wonderful view of Lübeck’s Cathedral looking towards the open-air stage. Many different events are held here in the summer months. Follow the path down and cross Wipperbrücke bridge. In the Middle Ages, fraudulent merchants were drowned from this bridge. After the bridge, you turn right again to the path along the bank of the Trave Canal. A few metres further, the Kaisertor playground tempts you to catch a breather. The pool dating back to around 1920 is a special highlight. Children play here to their heart’s content in summer.
Now you pass the remains of old walls and the arch of a gate, the old Kaisertor (Emperor’s Gate). Follow the path along the bank and under Mühlenbrücke bridge. Now you will get a glimpse of the cathedral between Krähenteich and the Trave Canal. From here, you have a wonderful view over the pond onto the old town wall, the cathedral and St. Giles’. At the end of your ramparts tour, go further on Hüxterdamm and follow the street until you reach Hüxstraße. Different galleries such as AC Noffke and gallery Ansichtssache as well as several restaurants and cafés are situated there. Ideal places to end the walk are for example Kaffeehaus, Nudelbude Manufaktur or La Vigna.
After your break we recommend visiting Haudels Gang, Zobels Gangor Zobels Hof at Schlumacherstraße. Please check the opening hours in advance and respect the privacy of the residents.
