Description
Detailed description
he three-aisled brick hall church was built in 1334 and consecrated together with St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s. By great fortune, St. Jacob’s survived World War II unscathed – preserving its original box pews and historic organs to this day. Particularly remarkable is the small “Stellwagen Organ”, one of the best-preserved North German organs from the 16th century.
A place of quiet remembrance is the Pamir Chapel, where a lifeboat commemorates the tragic sinking of the four-masted barque Pamir in 1957. Today, the chapel serves as the National Memorial of Civil Seafaring. Beneath the vault lies a columbarium, where the ashes of those whose lives were connected to the sea are laid to rest – a unique maritime memorial.
In front of the church stands a group of three-story brick houses dating from 1601, once used as residences for the church’s pastors.
