Description
Detailed description
The museum is located in two city palaces of the 18th century: the Behnhaus and the Drägerhaus. In the historic rooms - in addition to important collections of paintings and sculptures from the 19th century and Classical Modernism - residential ensembles from the 18th and 19th centuries are also on display. Above all, the "private rooms of the master and mistress of the house" in the wing rooms of the Behnhaus are among the most important classicist interiors in northern Germany. In the Drägerhaus, there is a rococo-style sequence of festive rooms, a unique ensemble of rooms in Lübeck based on the French model. Romantic and Nazarene art is a focal point of the collections on display in both houses. Among them are works by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen, Carl Gustav Carus and Lübeck's Friedrich Overbeck. Classical Modernism is represented by paintings by Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt, Gotthardt Kuehl, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and, above all, Edvard Munch, who was active in Lübeck at the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the interplay of the picture gallery and the historical rooms, the house is considered one of the most beautiful museums in northern Germany.
After extensive renovation work, the Museum Behnhaus Drägerhaus has been open again since November 2.
