Description
Detailed description
Shaped like an open book, decorated with quotes from his works and the insignia of the lyre and the bow and arrow of the ancient Greek god of poetry Apollo, a stele has commemorated the writer and Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann since 1975. Created by sculptor Ulrich Meier, the sculpture at Breite Straße 38 on the site of Thomas Mann's former parents' house commemorates the honorary citizen of our Hanseatic city. Unfortunately, it is no longer preserved.
However, the house of Mann's grandparents was rebuilt after it was destroyed in the Second World War. This house is also the setting for the novel "Buddenbrooks", for which Thomas Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. In addition to the sculpture in the pedestrian zone of Breite Straße, the writer and his works are also honored by the naming of one of Lübeck's grammar schools, the Thomas Mann School.
