The only music academy in Schleswig-Holstein is one of the most famous in the whole of Germany.
Thus, during the semester, concerts and events presented by the lecturers and students of the Lübeck University of Music take place on a daily basis. A special highlight is the Brahms Festival which is held every year in spring.
Cultural enjoyment at its best
The golden letters "Musikhochschule Lübeck" flash in the light of the sun. Apart from that, the façade on the Obertrave, composed of historical and modern elements, hardly reveals what is going on inside. Only when you enter the interior of the concert foyer through the purple double-winged door does it become clear that music rules in these rooms. In a total of 22 historic merchants' houses, one of the most beautiful and renowned conservatories in Germany was built, the only one in Schleswig-Holstein.
With around 300 concerts per year, the University of music is also Schleswig-Holstein's largest concert organiser. Anyone who is interested in music and appreciates ambience and a relaxed international atmosphere will quickly become a regular guest here. The students are on stage from the very beginning of their training as professional musicians. In music lessons, class evenings, exam concerts, symphony and choir concerts, opera performances or studio concerts, they give samples of their musical skills. The focus is on classical training, but jazz, rock and pop are also frequently on the programme.
Each year in May, renowned musicians of the University of Music play at the annual Brahms Festival, which delights audiences with well-known and lesser-known works of art by the late Romantic composer.
On almost every evening outside the holidays, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., guests are welcome to enjoy performances and music from a wide range of styles offered by students. During a guided tour through the Cathedral district of the Old Town the University od Music is often visited so you can get a glimpse behind the scenes.
